The closest Dunkin Donuts to me is two block west and three blocks north. I can follow that route, and I know I’ll get there. If you’re at my house and I tell you to go that way, you’ll get there and be enjoying delicious coffee and donuts in under 20 minutes, However…
If you’re starting at someone else’s house in a different neighborhood and you go two blocks west and three blocks north you’ll be lucky to end up in any sort of business at all let alone a donut shop, and in some parts of the country you’re equally likely to end up in a crack den…. and if I extend even further than that, if you’re in my hometown there aren’t even that many blocks to count, so you’ll get confused and end up in a cow pasture or something.
Does that mean my directions were wrong? No! It just means that my directions only work from my house…
In a previous post, I mentioned an online argument where two comics were discussing “How to ‘get good'” and I shared my thoughts on the matter…
But, this wasn’t the first debate of it’s kind that I’ve seen, and it certainly won’t be the last. I’ve seen opinions vary, in some pretty intense ways on how to pursue a path in comedy, and ultimately, I think all these debates are just silly.
They are usually between an older “established” guy and a younger “hot shot” or someone from the middle of the country and someone at the edge of the country, or… none of those things. But they always result from people who speak in absolute terms.
BUT…
There are no absolutes in comedy.
There are no universal truths.
…at least not when it comes to reaching milestones or progressing your career.
Comedy is the type of journey…
where everyone is starting in a different place and trying to get to a different place. Even if we all call it by the same name of “Making It” or “Success,” each persons definition of that goal is different and will probably change as they pursue it. Therefore it’s absurd to argue over what is the right or wrong way to go to get there. When comedians argue over how to best pursue a career or how to “get good” or how to “make it” they may as well be arguing over how to get to Dunkin Donuts from their respective houses, and it makes about as much sense.
As a comedy coach, I can’t categorically tell you the best way to get to ANY Dunkin Donuts from ANY point on the map, but if I can figure out where you’re starting from, I can help you to figure out the closest “Dunkin Donuts” to you and then we can chart a course to get there…shoot, It may turn out that you don’t even like Dunkin Donuts – I know for me, I’d much rather go to Krispy Kreme if I can find one – Nonetheless, if I know where you’re starting where you want to end up, we can plan a route together that will get you closer to where you want to go.
So if you want to get to the best donut shop you can find (aka improve your comedy) get in touch with me at Mastering Mirthology – Joke Coaching and Set Review and we’ll find you the best way to get there.
